In June 2006, Wei-Ling Gallery presents RECOLLECTION, a solo exhibition by the artist and printmaker Izan Tahir.
Although a Malaysian by birth, Izan has spent much of her life as an artist overseas and has exhibited her works in London, Paris and South Africa over the last 10 years. Recollection will be her first solo exhibition in Malaysia.
Artist's Statement
The Work is a departure from traditional printmaking whereby pieces are usually presented in multiple editions.
Here the techniques of printmaking are used to create a pallette of marks and impressions that are assembled into singular, unique images or monoprints.
The idea behind Recollection started as an expression of loss and rediscovery. It is addressing the fact that we live in an age of great emigration, movement, mobility and either forced or self exile from our country of birth. The experience of loss is universal. Loss of home, people, objects, moments, love and memories.
Recollection explores the rediscovery and recollection of the lost treasures. Usually the piecing together of fragments of the tangible and intangible creates a new tissue of feelings and hope and the desire to see and experience the distant and the unknown.
There is a fusion of words and design creating new meanings and stories of love, loss and discovery which are meant to cause viewers to take a journey into their own perceptions.
This poignant exhibition will feature at Wei-Ling Gallery from 5th June-28th June 2006.
