In 2005, Wei-Ling Gallery opened it doors with much pomp and ceremony to their inaugural exhibition 18@8 which featured 18 selected artists at No.8 Jalan Scott (the gallery’s address).
This exhibition has since become a fixture on the gallery’s calendar.
In 2006 Wei-Ling Gallery in collaboration with Amin Gulgee Gallery, Karachi Pakistan, took the second instalment of 18@8 KUL-KHI to Karachi,Pakistan. 2007 saw the exhibition back on homesoil and in the following two years the exhibition took on a new twist. 18@8-Vice and Virtue in 2008 saw nine selected artists creating two works each corresponding to one vice and one virtue. In 2009 the 18@8 1Malaysia:Beyond the Canvas sought to make artists express themselves outside the confines of the canvas to document their ideas of what 1Malaysia stands for through a central ‘transportation’ theme.
The 18@8 exhibition has become a definitive event on the Malaysian art scene as it is the gallery’s selection of contemporary artists, who have made waves in the preceding year and will be the ones to watch out for in the upcoming one. Thus the list of artists changes slightly every year.
Over the years, each 18@8 exhibition has had a different theme to inspire the artists to push boundaries to come up with works which are both compelling and iconic and allows them to experiment with new themes and ideas.
In December 2010, Wei-Ling Gallery has teamed up with Absolut Vodka who have had a long and illustrious association with art worldwide to present Absolut18@8.
The exhibition now in its fifth edition will bring together some of the country’s most established and cutting-edge artists in one of the most awaited shows on the art calendar and will take place from from 30th November 2010 - 3rd January 2011 at Wei-Ling Gallery.
Absolut Vodka and Wei-Ling Gallery will be presenting an exhibition that will include all art mediums ranging from paintings and sculptures to installations and video and will incorporate a charity angle in the year-end spirit of giving.
As part of the Absolut18@8 exhibition, the participating artists have created original artworks based on the ABSOLUT vodka bottle. This part of the project entitled Absolut 18@8 Bottles will be exhibited concurrently at the concourse of the Gardens Mall.
A private auction will be held on 8th December 2010 and a portion of the proceeds of sale from the Absolut 18@8 Bottles will go to SPCA.

ABSOLUT 18@8
ABSOLUT partners Wei-Ling Gallery to push the boundaries of art
and to celebrate a culture of timeless creativity
Kuala Lumpur, 25 November 2010 – ABSOLUT vodka, the leading international premium vodka brand, is once again extending its association with the Malaysian art community by collaborating with the Wei-Ling Gallery on the milestone 5th incarnation of its 18@8 Art Exhibition.
Wei-Ling Gallery Director, Lim Wei-Ling said, “The 18@8 exhibition has become a definitive event on the Malaysian art scene as it consistently features contemporary artists who have made waves in the preceding year and will be the ones to watch out for in the year ahead. A veritable smorgasbord of talent adorns the artist line-up every year, bringing together new and familiar talent alike.
“Over the years, each 18@8 exhibition has had a different theme to inspire the artists to push boundaries to come up with works which are both compelling and iconic and allows them to experiment with new themes and ideas. This collaboration with ABSOLUT is bound to inspire them further”, she added.
In 2005, Wei-Ling Gallery opened its doors with much pomp and ceremony at their inaugural exhibition 18@8 which featured 18 selected artists at No.8 Jalan Scott (the gallery’s address). This exhibition has since become a fixture on the gallery’s calendar and a haven for art aficionados in the know.
In 2006 Wei-Ling Gallery collaborated with the Amin Gulgee Gallery from Karachi, Pakistan, to bring the second installment of 18@8 dubbed 18@8 KUL-KHI to Pakistan. 2007 saw the exhibition back on home-soil and in the two years that followed the exhibition took on a new twist. 18@8-Vice and Virtue in 2008 saw nine selected artists creating two works each corresponding to one vice and one virtue.
In 2009 the exhibition embraced the 1Malaysia concept with 18@8 1 Malaysia: Beyond the Canvas where the artists were asked to express themselves outside the confines of the canvas to document their ideas of what 1Malaysia stands for expressed through a convention-challenging central theme based on public transport and how it impacts Malaysians.
For 2010, Wei-Ling Gallery has teamed up with ABSOLUT Vodka who have a long and illustrious association with art worldwide to co-present ABSOLUT 18@8. The exhibition, now in its fifth edition will bring together some of the country’s most established and cutting-edge artists in one of the most awaited shows on the art calendar and will take place from November 30thh 2010-January 2nd 2011 at Wei-Ling Gallery.
Absolut Vodka and Wei-Ling Gallery will be presenting an exhibition that will include all art mediums ranging from paintings and sculptures to installations and video and will incorporate a charity element in the spirit of year-end giving. Participating artists amongst others art luminaries include Anurendra Jegadeva, Ivan Lam, Choy Chun Wei and Yau Bee Ling.
“ABSOLUT has grown as a brand and still leads in creative collaborations and though the campaigns may change, we still operate on the same principles of being cutting edge and ahead of the curve, setting the trends and we still champion the values of being bold and engaging, much like when we collaborated with Andy Warhol in 1985”, said Terence Ong, Sales and Marketing Director of Pernod Ricard Malaysia.
“The ABSOLUT brand and its inspired campaigns have a cache of appeal that is both alluring and enduring. It’s no surprise that the brand is now synonymous with vodka, style and all things creative”, he added.
ABSOLUT has a long-standing passion for creativity. The ABSOLUT brand’s commitment to the arts has always been based on mutual inspiration, and the creative nature of the brand has attracted some of the leading artists of our time to develop their own personal interpretations of ABSOLUT – whether through art, fashion or music.
Today, the brand and its ads have integrated into common pop culture, spawning collector societies, dedicated websites, adverts by contemporary artists and two books. The ABSOLUT campaigns have become an integral part of modern culture.
