Artist portrays moods in abtract form

By PRIYA MENON

ARTIST Hamidi Haidi’s third exhibition entitled Timang reflects his sentiment on capturing, grasping and holding on to a concept.

He portrays all this in his abstract art forms.

With the idea called essence of chance he uses natural elements like gravity and industrial materials like paint and polyurethane to create works of arts that are meant to inspire the audience.

This 38-year-old began dabbling in abstract art when he was in Britain and before that, he worked on figures and forms.

A happy man: Hamidi with his art pieces.

“When I was in the UK, I began experimenting with industrial materials and from there I became fascinated with the different textures each materials bring forth,” he said.

Using techniques like dripping and rescraping, Hamidi creates a series of moods in his paintings.

“The techniques create unique effects and at the same time, I try to control some elements of the process,” he said.

Hamidi, who is now lecturing in UiTM Perak, said his new studio also inspired his third showcase.

Nice: `Kilasan’ is industrial paint on canvas.

The studio in Sri Iskandar in Perak is a former barber shop with remnants like mirrors placed all round the room, creating images and reflections.

“I was fascinated by the effect of the mirrors when we walk past them. It was a whole new concept,” he said.

He added that cars also produced distorted images and that inspired him further to create more pieces with distorted images.

He began his latest series in 2007 and each one took two weeks to a month to complete.

“Each piece is done separately. I start on one and finish it before I begin on another. I completed everything only in 2008,” Hamidi added.

The paintings vary in colour, spots and splotches.

Some are in bold colours like orange and red coupled with black while others are sombre and light.

Abstract: ‘Untitled’ by Hamidi is part of the display.

“As an artist, I cannot deny that mood affects each painting. I tried to bring forth my feelings to reality in the form of my art,” he said.

He added that the art he created was part of his process of thought. It represents his position in a certain space.

Hamidi’s work is on display at the Wei Ling Gallery in 8, Jalan Scott, Brickfields.

The exhibition is on till March 3. For more information, contact 03-2260 1106 or www.weiling-gallery.com.
